Is it Cheaper to Rent or Buy?
Money Advice Service
Not so long ago, before the the recession of the early 2000s took its grip, renting property across the UK was significantly cheaper each month than having a mortgage. But times have changed. Wages have increased only modestly, yet renting fees have skyrocketed. Yet the proportion of those choosing to rent continues to climb, as does the number of young adults failing to fly the nest of their parents until later years. Londoners are feeling the pressure more than most, with many seeing almost of their households disposable income going to pay for the roof over their heads. What is certain is that living arrangements across the UK will continue to be markedly different to those we have been used to up until now.
